Tribute to Poetry: Presentation of Sharon Olds’ Volume at the Instituto Cervantes

The Cervantes Institute hosted the presentation of a volume with a selection of poems by Sharon Olds, a compilation that included her own verses and the speech she gave when she received the I Joan Margarit Poetry Award at the Cervantes Institute in New York the previous year. The event was headed by Luis García Montero, director of Cervantes, and was attended by Javier Santiso, founder of La Cama Sol, as well as Mónica Margarit, daughter of the renowned Catalan poet. This award, established in 2023 for the purpose of promoting Margarit’s work and highlighting contemporary authors, recognized Olds for his significant contribution to American poetry. During the ceremony, poems were read by the artistic director of the Cervantes Theatre in London, Jorge de Juan, and translator Óscar Curieses. Olds, celebrated for her personal and provocative poetic style, is the recipient of several awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for her play “Stag’s Leap” in 2012. The Joan Margarit Poetry Prize, awarded annually, aims to honor renowned foreign poets, in line with Margarit’s commitment to promote the work of writers of different nationalities and languages. In this regard, the Cervantes Institute is committed to disseminating Margarit’s work and will consider the possibility of holding the award ceremony each year at its headquarters in Madrid or at one of its centers.
